George Orwell
subtitles interspersed throughout the film:
In the 1930s, George Orwell was living in an alley in an arrondissement in Paris. He was formerly a Police Officer working for the British Police in Burma.
When he lived in Paris, he often visited his Russian friend Boris who lived in an attic of a poor rooming house.
After wandering for days on cobblestone streets looking for work, Boris got George Orwell a job as a dishwasher at the Hotel X. George Orwell worked from early morning until late at night.
And for awhile, he worked in the kitchen of a small restaurant in Paris where a fat woman was the cook.
Orwell had an employer in England B., who wrote him telling of a job that was available. He was to be a private tutor to a rich child who was also a bedridden invalid. B. also sent Orwell a sizable advance. With this money, he was able to leave his dishwashing job in Paris.
He crossed a boat across the English Channel from France to London England.
Upon arriving in England he found out that B. and his family including the invalid child were going on vacation and the job would not start for about a month.

George Orwell wandered insolvent as a tramp down the streets of London. He stayed at lodging houses referred to as spikes. Hence the term, "the Orwellian spike". At one spike, Orwell noticed the bathing tub was coated with grime. He asked the tramp major if it could be cleaned.
"Shut yer bloody mouth and get on with your bath!"
Orwell wandered the streets with an Irish tramp he had met named Paddy. They sat in Trafalgar Square and ate sandwiches wrapped in newspaper. They picked and collected cigarette butts off the street.
One day, as they were lining up outside a spike for the evening, an old tramp asked Orwell if he could spare a smoke. Orwell offered him some of the collected tobacco.
The next morning, walking down the road away from the spike, he heard a voice calling. He turned around and looked to see the old tramp from the previous evening, "One good turn deserves another," and he put into Orwell's hand, four sodden, debauched and loathesome cigarette ends.
His employer B had finally returned from vacation and so Orwell at this time then, wound up being a private tutor to a tame invalid.
